Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has officially announced that Healthy Ireland has provided €100,000 in funding to parkrun Ireland in a new partnership deal. Every week parkrun organises a free 5k run at more than 30 venues across Ireland in parkland surroundings where people of every age and ability are encouraged to take part.
Speaking at the launch Minister Varadkar said: “parkrun offers fantastic opportunities for people to take part in a 5k run in a fun and positive environment. It’s a dream initiative for any aspiring runner. You simply log on, download your number, and take part in a 5k run in your local park. Your time is recorded and you can compare your progress from week to week. It couldn’t be easier and it’s all free of charge.”
Almost 37,000 participants have run 1,000,000 km in parkrun events around Ireland since it started here in 2012. Originally launched in the UK, there have been a total of 1.5 million registrations worldwide making it the single biggest running participation event on the planet. Apart from Healthy Ireland, the partnership also includes Athletics Ireland, Sport Ireland and Philip Lee Solicitors.
